madfurrycheshirecat asked: I hope you don't mind me messaging you, but I noticed the pictures of your African Grey who has been plucking. How old is your bird and how long have they been plucking? I have a nearly 2 year old female named Tui who plucked a couple of months after I first had her and I always assumed it was the stress of coming to a new home. She only plucked once and has never done it again, and has a full body of feathers back. Hope you don't mind me getting in touch. Take care.

No, I don’t mind at all! Our grey is about a year and a half to 2 years old (not sure about the exact hatch date, but we were told her approx age when we adopted her). We are her second home, her former owner joined the Navy and couldn’t keep her.

The owner of the bird store we got her from was her owner’s neighbor, and used to birdsit her when the guy went on vacation. He told us that she would pluck as soon as he left, and stop as soon as he came back.

Sure enough, she started up all over again when he had to give her up, and she looks like she is starting to molt for the first time since we adopted her in September. We’re hoping she’s comfortable enough with us, gets enough toys/interaction and is happy enough that she will let her feathers grow in this time. :) Thanks for sharing your story! I’m glad Tui stopped plucking, it’s encouraging to hear success stories. :)
